Coworking Space in a Mall? An Interview With Industrious

We sat down with the PR and Communications Manager of Industrious, a coworking brand that has made its mark in the US coworking industry. She shares more about their new premium coworking space in Scottsdale's luxury shopping destination, and how Industrious made it work.

1. Tell us what kind of coworking space Industrious is and how it stands out from the rest (Eg. Wework, Regus).

Industrious is the largest premium flexible workplace provider in the U.S. with more than 65 locations across 40 cities.  Our product offerings are intended to support companies of all sizes and stages, ranging from traditional coworking seats, private offices, enterprise-level suites, and tenant experience management solutions for entire buildings.

Industrious is hyper-focused on providing its members with an elevated workplace experience and our community managers take care of members’ day-to-day needs so that they can focus on running their business.  Beyond inspiring workspaces that are thoughtfully-designed to increase productivity, Industrious memberships are all-encompassing, including everything from high-speed internet access, unlimited color printing, fully-stocked cafe with craft food and beverage options, and access to its national network with the ability to work out of any location as needed.

2. How did Industrious come up with the idea to open the coworking space at your Scottsdale location?

It's important to us that we be in locations that can help deliver an amazing workplace experience to our members.  Being in a mall, Fashion Square in particular, really nails that.  It’s the obvious things, like accessibility, plenty of free on-site parking, and the food court, but also things like being next to an Apple Store or a Nordstrom.  The ability to quickly pop out and run errands without losing too much valuable time at work is a game-changer.  Our members recognize this as well — Industrious Scottsdale — Fashion Square reached near complete occupancy just 10 weeks after opening.

Industrious also believes in being a partner to landlords in today’s new era of commercial real estate.  Our Fashion Square location is the first of many in collaboration with Macerich, one of the country’s largest shopping center owners and operators.  We're going to see more and more coworking locations appear in retail environments across all submarkets.   Landlords are becoming increasingly concerned about what to do with 40,000 square-feet of retail space — coworking is the next viable option.

3. What kind of members does your space attract and how do you attract them?

Our professional atmosphere and hospitality-driven, member-first approach attracts a more sophisticated clientele than your typical flexible workplace provider.  The average maturity of a company that occupies Industrious is 12-13 years and the average age of a member is 38.  We have reshaped the concept of coworking into scalable solutions for companies of all sizes and stages accommodating everyone from solopreneurs to enterprise-level members.  Across the country, Industrious members include large, well-known companies including Pfizer, Hytt, Airbus, Pandora, Lyft, and Pinterest.

4. What makes a premium coworking space?

Industrious locations have an elegant and professional design, adorned with high-quality materials including marble tabletops and Herman Miller chairs, for example.  Beyond the physical workspace, premium also defines the experience we provide to our members.  Our highly-attentive community managers do an exceptional job of catering to our members, developing engaging programming, and fostering a warm and welcoming sense of community.  We pride ourselves on the personal connection we forge with each member and work to anticipate unknown needs to ensure they feel taken care of.  We also offer meaningful events; for example, lunch-and-learns on how to raise capital for your company, creativity stations to make personalized greeting cards for someone that has an impact on your life for International Day of Happiness, networking happy hours with craft cocktails, and more.

3. Benefits of Tagging Others

Social data also describes the interaction between social media users. While comments, likes, and shares are the most obvious forms of interaction on social media, tags are another form of communication between social media users.

Tagging is one of the most effective tips for coworking on social media. When it comes to promoting your coworking space, tags do an amazing job at increasing your visibility. On Facebook, for instance, your post will have more reaches if you tag others:

If you often organize events at your coworking space, you can tag the participants. If you have some special offers, tag someone who helps you promote them. Any tag conveys social data, as it transfers information from one user to another. It’s a great way to become more visible online and attract potential clients.

In Conclusion

Like any other big data, social data has limitations, as not every social media user shares information. Nevertheless, social data is still very effective for marketing purposes, as it can help your coworking space become more recognizable.

Using the above-mentioned social data techniques together will help you increase visibility, as they will help others find your coworking space more easily. In general, these techniques are aimed at targeting large numbers of people and help them easily navigate the space of social media to find the best coworking spaces.
